Sign Up Bonuses Can You Get More Than Once
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GET THE SAME CREDIT CARD AGAIN?
Simply put, the BEST way to earn a lot of points quickly is via a credit card sign up offer.
But did you know… that you can get most cards AGAIN? You simply have to wait a specified amount of time and then you can downgrade or cancel your current card, wait a few weeks, and apply for a new card to get the new sign up bonuses.
This is especially useful if a card you are holding comes out with an elevated offer and you are eligible to receive the sign up bonus again.
CHASE
Chase Co-Branded Cards
Here are some cards you can get a new welcome offer 24 months from last welcome offer (but not limited to)…
The World of Hyatt Credit Card
Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card
Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card
IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card
As well as the United, Aeroplan, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia co-branded cards
Have I personally gotten the sign up bonus more than once on any of these cards?
Yes for the Southwest cards.
This is a very popular strategy to earn the Southwest Companion Pass every 2 years. It is the most common strategy.
No for all other cards.
For the hotel cards we have (Hyatt) we find that the annual free night certificate that comes with them (after 1 year) is reason enough to hold the cards.
At one point we had the United℠ Explorer Card – we opened it for the large sign up bonus. Then after 1 year of having it, we downgraded to the $0 annual fee United Gateway℠ Card.
Going forward strategy on these cards:
I will continue to close/reopen Southwest cards as needed.
CAPITAL ONE VENTURE CARDS
➡️ Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
Not eligible for new welcome offer if you’ve earned a Venture X bonus in the past 48 months
➡️ Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
Not eligible for new welcome offer if you’ve earned a Venture X or Venture bonus in the past 48 months
➡️ Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card
Not eligible for new welcome offer if you’ve earned a Venture X, Venture, or VentureOne bonus in the past 48 months
💡 In short: Moving up is the best strategy for welcome offer eligibility:
VentureOne → Venture → Venture X
You also need to space Capital One personal credit card applications by minimum 6 months apart.
Have I personally gotten the sign up bonus more than once on any of these cards?
No, I have not.
Going forward strategy on these cards
I will always keep the Capital One Venture X card as I’m obsessed with the lounge access and am lucky to have a Capital One lounge at our home airport (Denver). I find HUGE value in this card.
The Capital One Venture Rewards card was worth getting for the sign up bonus for sure. But with the $95 annual fee, and no unique benefits I don’t already get with other cards, I will likely cancel this card after holding it for 1 year.
AMERICAN EXPRESS
American Express in general has a “lifetime” rule that you can not get the sign up bonus on their cards more than once. However, many people (not me), report that lifetime is generally 5 – 7 years and that you could then get the sign up bonus again.
The thing I like about American Express cards is that, usually, when you are applying for a card with a sign up bonus, right before you hit submit, it will actually tell you if you are eligible for the sign up bonus or not.
Have I personally gotten the sign up bonus more than once on any of these cards?
I have personally closed and reopened (with NLL offer) American Express® Business Gold Card.
Going forward strategy on these cards:
For personal cards, I only have The Platinum Card® from American Express.
Because American Express recently changed their rules, I am now not eligible for a sign up bonus on the American Express® Gold Card (you aren’t eligible for the sign up bonus on the American Express® Gold Card if you have or have had The Platinum Card® from American Express). Therefore, I may downgrade my Platinum card to the Gold card when my annual fee ($695) hits. Or, I may continue trying to make that huge $695 fee worth it.
