Hyatt Regency Maui Review – Points Stay

My family visited Maui over spring break (March 2024).
We stayed 3 nights at Hyatt Regency Maui, 1 night at Marriott Wailea Beach Resort & 4 nights at Andaz Maui. We used points and certificates for all 8 nights. Saving over $10K. Here’s my review of the Hyatt Regency Maui as a Hyatt Globalist staying on points/free night certificate….

BOOKING HYATT REGENCY MAUI WITH POINTS

At the time of booking, the Hyatt Regency Maui was a Hyatt category 7.

At the time of our visit, our stay was during “peak” nights. We transferred 70K Chase Ultimate Reward points to Hyatt and booked 2 nights on points and for the 3rd night we used a category 1-7 free night certificate.

When we reached Hyatt Globalist status last year (after staying 60 nights in 1 calendar year) we received several suite night upgrade certificates and a category 1-7 free night certificate. Not only did we use the free night certificate for this stay, we were able to apply the suite night upgrade for the 2 nights which were not booked with the certificate (unfortunately, you can’t use suite night upgrades on nights booked with a certificate, but nights booked with points is fine 🙂 )

As you can see from the below image, the 3 nights at the Hyatt Regency Maui would have cost $4720!

GLOBALIST BENEFITS AT HYATT REGENCY MAUI

  • Access to Regency Club Lounge – Which means breakfast in the mornings, evening appetizers and desserts which can easily sub as dinner if you wanted and lights snacks in the afternoon ( soda, delicious POG juice, chips & cookies)
  • Free valet parking ($40 waived, daily!)
  • Waived daily resort fee ($45 waived, daily!)
  • Happy hour pricing available all day at ‘Umalu pool bar (there were no food options, just drinks)
  • Late check out, upgrades when available

Having Globalist benefits in Maui is a HUGE money saver. With Hyatt Globalist status you will have access to the Club Lounge. But if you are not Globalist, another way to gain Club Lounge access would be with the Hyatt Milestone award after hitting 20 nights (in 1 calendar year) or 35K base points.

MAUI REGENCY CLUB REVIEW

I am not a huge fan of hotel club lounge breakfasts. They often feel way too crowded. Messy. And have uninspired options. However… we really enjoyed this one.

First let me say the people who work in the lounge are the sweetest. And on a whole, the breakfast offerings weren’t bad. Banana bread was on point. On Sundays they have lox & bagels which I love. And one day they had fantastically crispy bacon. Always great fruit options too.

One BIG star of this lounge is that patio! (see image above) The most perfect place to have breakfast. And even more perfect place to have a cocktail/glass of wine in the evening. The club lounge offers these beverages very discounted. You place your order inside the lounge and they’ll bring it out to you. The ocean view and breeze is incredible. Tiki torches are lit at night. I absolutely loved this patio!

HYATT REGENCY MAUI LOCATION

The Regency is located in Ka’anapali. There is a long sidewalk (next to the ocean) that leads from Black Rock Beach all the way to the Regency. In between you’ll find Whaler’s Village, tons of hotels/condos with cafes, places to take snorkeling cruises or rent gear and the beach gets wider and wider as you leave the Hyatt and walk towards Black Rock Beach.

This location is perfect for having the ability to stroll to Whaler’s Village every night for dinner. There are so many choices here. And cute shopping.

The beach out front of the Hyatt is not great. It’s a narrow beach. And when we visited, it had quite the current/pull. Also, they Hyatt doesn’t set up chairs/umbrellas there. So if you want to hang at the beach, you’ll be sitting on your towel or you need to walk towards Whaler’s Village and rent chair/umbrella set up somewhere.

Since it’s completely paved from one end to the next, it’s a wonderful place to walk in the morning. And when we were there in March, it was whale season. So you could be walking along and just see whales blowhole spray or even whale’s breaching – amazing!

IDEAL FOR FAMILIES

Currently the swim grotto is closed which is a bummer. But the kids pool is still open and it’s great for younger kids. The main pool is where we mostly hung out this trip and it is a very deep pool with very little shallow areas. I prefer more areas you can stand in personally.

REVIEW OF ROOM AND STANDARD SUITE AT MAUI REGENCY

There are 3 buildings that make up this hotel. We were in the Lahaina Tower which is also where the club lounge is, so that made it very convenient.

Our standard 1 bedroom suite has 2 balconies. One facing the island/parking and 1 facing the ocean. Unfortunately the one facing the ocean is too small to fit chairs so I just stood out there a lot oohing and awing. That view was amazing. The suite had a better coffee maker than the standard rooms and way better bathroom – there is a separate shower with 2 shower head, although only 1 sink (standard rooms have 2). We really enjoyed this room.

Pull out couch was awful-
we ordered the rollaway
Pretty spacious & comfortable

On the last night we moved to the standard 2 queen room. These rooms are fantastic as well and quite large. The only thing I didn’t like was the shower/tub combo with shower curtain – I hate shower curtains in hotels and they should all be out lawed.

WOULD WE VISIT AGAIN?

Absolutely! This is our 2nd time visiting this property on points. From the open air lobby, to the KINDEST staff, to the large rooms. There is a lot to love. This location is much busier feeling than the Hyatt Andaz down the road in Wailea. This is definitely a more casual vibe than that hotel.

HYATT REGENCY MAUI vs ANDAZ WAILEA

Even though I adore the Hyatt Regency Maui, after staying at the Andaz Wailea, my new favorite is the Andaz. The Wailea area in general feels more upscale. The rooms are much smaller at the Andaz, but I love the almost Japanese feel. The Andaz has a zero entry pool at the bottom of the property and then 3 infinity pools above it. Chair are saved early at both properties and not removed. And as a Globalist, the Andaz breakfast buffet & made to order eggs were off the chart delicious.

Ideally, upon returning to Maui, we’ll do another split stay. It’d stay at Regency first for that laid back vibe, then move onto Maui for that more lux fee.

EARNING HYATT POINTS FOR FREE STAYS

While at the Andaz, I overheard a family saying how they stayed on points from their The World of Hyatt Credit Card.
Do I love my The World of Hyatt Credit Card? YES. Do I put daily spend on that card? NO.
The key to earning more Hyatt stays is to rack up Chase points and transfer them to Hyatt. Earn more than 1x point per dollar on every purchase so you can get MORE free stays!
